Exclusive Excerpt from Patterns and Color Guides - Part Two

Lesser Scaup Drake (60% Life-size)

BILL
Use a mix of white, burnt umber, and ultramarine blue. Detail with a darker version of the same mix.

HEAD
Base coat with black. Highlight the brighter purple areas with gray, and then apply a few washes of dioxazine purple to the entire head. The darker areas such as the neck and around the eyes get a couple of washes of ultramarine blue.

SCAPULARS
The vermiculation is a mix of black and burnt umber. Use a wash or two of the same mix to darken the area and to soften the harsh vermiculation. The area should be darkest toward the rear.

TAIL COVERTS AND RUMP
Treat this area as you did the breast, but add a final thin wash of black mixed with Hooker's green to give some color to the area.

SIDE POCKET
The vermiculation here is a thinner version of what you used on the scapulars, but rather than washing the area darker, use thinly applied white to soften the look.

PRIMARIES, SECONDARIES, TERTIALS, AND TAIL
Build washes of burnt umber mixed with ultramarine blue to get a warm dark brown. The secondaries get a final wash of burnt umber with Hooker's green. Complete the tertials with white vermiculation, and then add a thin wash of the brown mix to soften the harsh white lines.
