Wildfowl Carving Magazine's Winter 2018 Issue Has Diversity

NEW CUMBERLAND, PA— Bird carvers turn to Wildfowl Carving magazine to get ideas for their carving projects, and the Winter 2018 issue will not disappoint them.
The latest edition of the magazine includes everything from an article about how to carve a belted kingfisher to detailed instructions on painting a ringed teal. In addition, there’s an article about swans that includes detailed reference photos and painting instructions, an article about creating an aspen branch habitat for a scrub jay carving, and painting notes for the gray catbird.
“We won’t be running out of species to cover anytime soon,” says editor Tom Huntington, who points out that the American Museum of Natural History recently issued a study that doubled the estimated number of bird species in the world, to 18,000.
Not all of the birds featured in the Winter issue are from North America, either. Award-winning carver Brad Snodgrass wraps up a two-part demonstration on carving and painting the ringed teal, a bird from South America. On the other side of the spectrum, the gray catbird is a species that people might see in their backyards and birdfeeders every day.
“One of the great things about editing this magazine is you’re going to have new species every issue,” says Huntington. “The incredible diversity in the bird world means we can always come up with something to surprise and inspire our readers. From ducks to raptors, songbirds to shorebirds, we cover them all.”
Wildfowl Carving Magazine began publishing with its Spring 1985 issue, when it was still known as Wildfowl Carving & Collecting Magazine. In the more than three decades since then, it has become the only magazine for bird carving and has published a wealth of informative articles about all aspects of the art form. The magazine is published quarterly by Ampry Publishing, LLC, of Northbrook, Illinois, with editorial offices in central Pennsylvania.
