The male evening grosbeak is a flashy bird and a favorite visitor at bird feeders. It is a sturdy finch with a massive conical bill and a severe, even angry, look due to its yellow eye stripe. It has a short, thick neck and a short, forked tail. The colors of the male are especially striking. The body is mostly yellow, the wings are black, and the head is dark brown. A dusky olive-brown covers the cape and breast. The white wing patches contrast with the black wings, adding to the bird’s spectacular appearance. The male’s thick bill is off-white or bone colored, taking on a greenish color in the spring.
