Carving an American Flamingo, Part One
Flamingoes have been described as “goofily charming” in both looks and behavior. With long, gangly legs and “knees” that appear to bend backwards, a long neck that can bend and twist in ridiculous ways, and a method of feeding with the bill upside down, there’s plenty to justify the “goofy” description. And if you’ve seen a flamingo bathing, lying on its back with legs flailing the air, then you’ve truly seen the goofy side of these birds. In spite of all this, flamingoes are beautiful creatures. They display gorgeous colors, and pose and move gracefully. They are definitely worth a carver’s attention, but so far that attention seems limited. Perhaps carvers are intimidated by their size—a life-size carving would be a monumental task. So, we will focus on a miniature.
