Wood Thrush

By: Rich Smoker

Whenever I teach a carving and painting seminar, I create a handout for the students that reinforces the hands-on instructions I provide. Of course, what I really hope is that my students will take the handouts home and use them to do birds on their own.
The purpose is to keep people carving because, as I stress in every class, carving is fun! Enjoy. The inspiration for the wood thrush class came from the spring turkey woods (wood thrushes) and the winter deer woods (hermit thrushes) I see around my home in Maryland. This class was a Road Scholar program where we used hand tools only. We incorporated cast feet and made the leaves out of coffee filters. The most challenging aspect of this class was the presence of a gentleman who was totally blind, requiring me to revise my teaching methods to incorporate more about utilizing the sense of touch.
