Blue Grosbeak

This bird woke up with the blues.

By: Jerry Poindexter
Blue Grosbeak

The blue grosbeak (Guiraca caerulea) is between 5 1/2 and 7 3 /4 inches in length, with a stout, conical bill. The male is blue with two rusty wing bars, and sometimes in poor sunlight will appear dark blue. There is some difference in coloration across the southern United States from east to west, especially in the west. The blue grosbeak has been seen as far north as southern Canada.
