Gadwall with a Twist

A fun project to keep you on your toes.

By: Richard Smoker

This project was the focus of a Road Scholar Carving Program held here in Crisfield, Maryland.  I always like to include a few “changes” to each class to keep people on their toes and keep them learning new carving techniques.

This class incorporated using a “wedge” in the neck to turn the head. I wanted to show we could make an easy “preener” out of this decoy. The wrinkle proved interesting—everyone in the class tried this technique, with, I will add, great results. I do remember that we painted late one night. But when finishing time came around the next morning, everyone was happy, if a bit tired.
